Goals

For most of my adult life my diet and exercise goals looked like this:

• Lose 10 pounds
• Fit into size xx jeans
• Lose fat
• Get a six pack
• Gain muscle
• Have thin thighs

Notice a theme?

These goals are all about how I look.

There’s nothing here about how I feel. Or what I can do.

I just started working with a personal trainer because I have new goals:

• Do perfect pushups
• Do pullups
• Compete in the Women’s Barbell Classic

These three things are a big deal for me because:

• I have always sucked at pushups and have never been able to do them well
• I have always sucked at pullups and have never been able to do one
• I have always sucked at individual sports and have never done anything like powerlifting

These goals are all about what I CAN DO.

They are going to take physical and mental effort. They’re also forcing me to get out of my comfort zone, which is always tough. It’s also a great way to accomplish some things that might make me say, “Holy crap! I did it! I’m AWESOME!!!”

I’m going to post about my progress periodically to keep myself accountable (and hopefully get some encouragement from you).

What are YOUR goals and have they changed over the years?

PS…there’s nothing inherently wrong with wanting to have a nice butt or bigger biceps, but the singular focus on appearance became unhealthy for me.
